NSS AISAT unit along with the management decided to conduct a week long special camp on January 2017. As a part of this camp Associate manager Rev. Fr. Alex Kurishuparambil, Principal Prof. Dr. K.E. George, NSS Programme Officer Mr. Majo Davis, Mr. Tiju Baby Asst. Prof. EEE Dept. visited St. Ambrose church, Edavanakad on Dec 2nd 2016 and met Rev. Fr. Mathew Dchuna and Fr. Paul. From this visit, AISATIANS came to know about the requirements and lifestyles of Edavanakad peoples.
NSS special camp commenced on 31 January 2017 with the registration. The camp was given a head start by Prof. Jose V Mathew who gave all the NSS volunteers a pre orientation class. Majo Davis, NSS Progranmme Officer divided the volunteers into different groups.
NSS camp inauguration ceremony was held at 2:30 pm at St Ambrose church parish hall . Camp was inaugurated by Ms. Bindhu Benny, Vice president Edvanakad Grama panchayat. Rev. Fr. Mathew D Chuna, Vicar St. Ambrose church edavankkad, Mr. Nadeshan, development standing committee chairman, Mr. Alby, ward member, Ms. Anadhavally challapan, Ward member, Sr. Mini, Mother superior, Ms. Sharlet HM St. Ambrose school felicitated the gathering.This was followed by familiarization of the camp venue, which included the beach visit. Everyone enjoyed the thrilling waves of the sea as well as the sunset. Later on a general orientation class was given by NSS program officer, Mr. Majo Davis.
The next day started with an assembly, the NSS flag was hoisted by Fr. Mathew Dchuna. After breakfast everyone was split into groups and sent for an energy conservation survey. Each house was given an LED bulb to promote energy conservation. Every NSS volunteer was given a warm welcome to each house visited.Then the survey report was analyzed and studied.
The third NSS camp day began with an assembly where the flag was hoisted by Asst. Vicar Fr. Paul. Then the NSS volunteers had an activity oriented career guidance class, which was led by Mr. Vishnu Loha Jacob. His class inspired us to think deep and it also helped us to understand the fact that the world is full of opportunities. After the class, lunch was served. The next seminar was led by Mr. Tiju Baby Asst. Prof. EEE Department on how to reduce power consumption. This was a combined class for both the NSS crew as well as the locality members.
This was followed by a seminar on pipe compost led by Mr. Vamadevan. Around 40 people from the village were present at the venue to learn and know about the installation of pipe compost.The fourth special NSS camp day was inaugurated by Ms. Renjini with the flag hoisting.Then the vegetable garden inauguration was led by Parish Vicar Fr. Mathew D’cunah, who is a naturalist. He gave us instructions regarding when and how the plantations must be in the church compound and all the NSS volunteers actively took part in the farming activity. Various vegetables and fruits were planted like tomato, beans, lady’s finger, spinach, ginger, turmeric, etc.
The Fifth special NSS camp day was inaugurated by Miss Anusha Martin.The day’s program began with a seminar on stem cell donation by ‘DATRI’, a non-profitable, cancer awareness organization. The entire NSS crew participated in this camp, along with the parish youth members. Various volunteers who were inspired by the seminar voluntarily gave their cheek cell samples to obtain their PLA profile, so as to donate their stem cells as per requirement. After this seminar, a class was conducted by Dr. Aneeta, clinical Psychologist, Lourdes Hospital, Ernakulam. This was followed by Vridha Sanghamam where all the elderly members above 60 years of age gathered at the parish hall.
The final day of the NSS special day camp began with a flag hoisting by Shane Xavier, NSS Volunteer Secretary . the free Medical camp, was organized covering four medical departments namely, General, Ortho, Dental and Ayurveda. Important medical instructions were provided along with medicines for certain types of illness. There was an overwhelming response from the residents of the area. Almost two hundred people attended the camp and kept the doctors busy .The medical camp ended at 1 pm after which lunch was served.
