The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering conducted a one day workshop program for the final year (2013-2017 Batch) students on “Basics of LaTeX”, documentation software on 19th July 2016. The session started at 9:00 am and the whole day session was guided by Ms.Reshma Mary Jose, Assistant Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

LaTeX is widely used in academics for the communication and publication of scientific documents in many fields, including Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Economics and Political science. It also has a prominent role in the preparation and publication of books and articles. LATEX uses the TeX program for formatting its output, and is itself written in the TeX macro language. LATEX is intended to provide a high-level language that accesses the power of TeX in an easier way for writers.

IMG_9917

LaTeX also offers programmable desktop publishing features and extensive facilities for automating most aspects of typesetting and desktop publishing including numbering and cross referencing, tables and figures, page layout, bibliographies and much more.

IMG_9920

The main aim of this workshop was to introduce the absolute beginners to LaTeX and learning the basic commands and to write documents in LaTeX using TeXworks. This document preparation system is used for producing professional looking documents and this provides an easiness in documentation of seminar as well as project reports. The students were effectively participated in the entire session to improve their documentation skills. The program was concluded by 3:00 pm.

There have been a lot of incidents about ragging taking place across the state and the country. Keeping this in mind AISAT has conducted a session on Ragging and its Consequences on August 3, 2016. The resource persons for the session were Mr. Rajesh, Practicing Advocate High Court of Kerala and Mr. Mohin.C.S. Sub Judge.

IMG_9911

Principal Dr. K.E. George introduced the resource person. Advocate Mr. Rajesh handled the first session. He described what is ragging and cited the latest incidents as examples.  He explained that the early phases of ragging started during the First World War in the military camp with a positive intention. Later it started in the school and college campuses. He explained that ragging doesn’t mean untoward incident from a senior to a junior but any activity which a student is force to do is considered as ragging. He also mentioned about the consequences which a student has to face if he is involved in ragging. He also said that the institutions will also have to face the consequences if the ragging is not reported to the police on time. Mr.Mohin, Sub Judge concluded the session saying that students involved in ragging are considered as criminals and urged the students not to involve in this crime under any circumstances.

The class was very effective and it clearly explained how serious crime is ragging

As a part of academic curriculum activities two faculty members Mrs.Femey Rose and Mr.Tubin T.X along with 15 students of  S5 Electronics and Communication Engineering(Batch 3)  were decided to visit industries on 30th July 2016. The students visited FABLAB, AIR  and DOORDARSHAN. Students  reached the FABLAB at 10.30 am. The Kerala Start up mission employee Mr. Daniel Jeevan received us at the entrance and gave us a brief introduction about FABLAB.
IMG_20160730_114303_HDR
FABLAB(Fabrication Laboratory) is small-scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication. A FABLAB is generally equipped with an array of flexible computer controlled tools. At the FABLAB he explained about vinyl cutter,3D plotter,CNC router,3D printing, laser cutter, sensors, moulding and casting. It was an informative and interesting session.

IMG_20160730_130550_HDR

The next visit was to AIR . Mr.Anand,an employee of AIR studio welcomed the students and explained about the communication, its basic components AM,FM,need for modulation etc.Students were able to understand these concepts thoroughly because of the theory classes of Analog communication.Students were granted permission to enter the recording studio and could learn about the live FM program. The studio wall was made of porous material to avoid reverberation and echo.

IMG-20160731-WA0009

At 2.00 pm students reached DOORDARSHAN. This is one of India’s largest broadcasting organisation in terms of studio and transmitter infrastructure . All the three visits were really informative. Being Electronics and Communication Engineering students this industrial visit helped them to gain more knowledge about the communication area . It also gave the students inspiration to learn about more technologies and also to invent something that will be useful in nearby future. Students  are looking forward to more opportunities like this, that can help them to develop their technical skills.

This time the resource person for the seminar was Dr. M. V. Rajesh, Professor College of Engineering Poonjar.

IMG_9952

The seminar detailed on basic professionalism a student should exhibit for becoming a true professional and also explained the various routes available for an electronics engineering student to excel. As Electronics finds it part in any technology of the day the opportunities for electronics students will always remain high.

IMG_3787IMG_20160805_095245_HDR

The speaker emphasized on the fact that the concern of students regarding the toughness of the subjects lies in the lack of passion. The students interacted with the resource person and rated the program as effective and apt.

A workshop for EEE, ECE and CSE faculty was organized on “Open Technology Training for Engineers”. The resource person was Mr. Ashok Shenoy. He is an expert who had trained faculty of various reputed companies like Qualcomm, UTC, EMC2, Wells Fargo, American Megatrends India (AMI), GDB, BOA, HCL, VMVare, Wipro ,  Alcatel Lucent , L & T Infotech ,  HCL Infosystems ,  Polaris,  Vista System Software ,  Safran Aerospace ,  Siemens Information Systems Ltd, Computer Science Corp ,  Nest Technologies ,  Eram Infotech.

IMG_9983

This program falls in Engineer Teacher Initiative and was organized in the Systems lab under the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The engineer teacher initiative is the brain child of our director Prof. Dr. Babu T. Jose. The intention is to bring in more practicing engineers as teacher so as to impart field experience to the students to make them employable. The program helped the participants to understand the real power of C programming and how an engineer uses C program attributes to suit his requirement. The product design route map was also discussed and it was effective because of the first hand collaboration of the resource person to the various companies.

IMG_9974

This makes it imperative for engineers in the electronic, electrical, mechanical and Information Technology domains to gain the technical knowledge required to create industrial strength applications and appliances using these open technologies. The objective of these short duration meetups is to create awarenes and intrest in open technology and enhance more participation. The ability to learn a new hardware or software technology platform and assemble circuits and write code to develop solutions with it does not ensure development of a good commecrializable engineered product.Open technology too requires training the engineer in using open toolsets productively to guarantee the development of products. He concluded that an engineer who has been well trained in the techniques of using open technology tools will be in high demand in MNCs.
