National Science Day Celebrations 2019 Sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE) & DST
National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28th February every year to mark the discovery of the “Raman effect” by the Great Indian physicist Sir C V Raman on 28th February 1928. It is celebrated every year to widely spread a message about the Importance of science used in the daily life of the people, to encourage as well as popularize Science and Technology. The focal theme for the year 2019 is “Communicating science for all”.
To commemorate the Great Visionary, Albertian Institute of Science & Technology (AISAT) celebrated “National Science Day” on 28th February 2019 titled “Science for Sustainable Future” sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment (KSCSTE) and supported by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India.
On the occasion, AISAT organised competitions with attractive cash prizes, science exhibition, and science lecture. The competitions were open for school students from class VIII to XII. Science exhibition and lecture were open to school and college students.
Students from neighbouring schools like, Govt. High School, Kalamassery, St. Joseph’s HSS, Kalamassery, Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, Assissi Vidyaniketan Public School, Kakkanad, St. Paul’s International School, Kalamassery, St. Albert’s HSS, Ernakulam, participated in the competitions.
Colors
The painting competition: colors, was conducted for the school students. The first prize of Rs 2000/- and merit certificate was won by Miss Manasa V Payyeri, Class X, St. Paul’s International School, Kalamassery. The second prize of Rs 1000/- and merit certificate was won by Miss Maria Josephine, Class IX, Assissi Vidyaniketan Public School, Kakkanad.
Thrust Talk
Extempore Speech competition was titled ‘Thrust Talk’ and students from the neighboring schools participated in the competition. The topic was ‘Science that changed your life’. Mr. Paul Ansel V, Vice-principal, AISAT & Member of Toastmaster’s International and Ms. Veena V., Associate Professor & Member of Toastmaster’s International were the judges for the event. The first prize of Rs 2000/- and merit certificate was won by Master Sohal Sanjay, Class XII, St. Paul’s International School, Kalamassery. The second prize of Rs 1000/- and merit certificate was won by Miss Saniya Saheer, Class IX, Assissi Vidyaniketan Public School, Kakkanad.
Reflection of Science
The Science Exhibition which portrayed the use of science in daily life was arranged in the campus. The exhibition was conducted from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm on the day. The entry was for school and college students. The students from various schools and also the students of AISAT from different branches visited the exhibition. The models displayed at the exhibition were made the first year students of engineering.
Erudite lecture on “Science for Sustainable future”
A lecture on Science for sustainable future was delivered by Dr. Rhine Kumar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Physics, CUSAT on the day. In his talk he elaborated about the history of National Science Day and the importance of science in society. He also spoke about periodic table and mentioned that the year 2019 is designated as the international year of periodic table. He explained the present energy scenario and the importance of energy conservation. He highlighted the need to change our energy production from conventional energy sources to renewable energy source for a sustainable future.
