Fluid mechanics is one of the core sections in the Mechanical Engineering field dealing with the fluid properties, type of flow and the equations governing the behaviour of fluid. The students are given exposure to the various theory portions covered in the syllabus by the experiments arranged in the Lab. This well-equipped lab is suitable for conducting various experiments related to the basics of fluid mechanics, fluid flow and flow measurement. Students are given the best opportunity to clearly understand the concepts they were taught in Fluid Mechanics theory.

The Hydraulic Machines Lab provides the students an ample opportunity to familiarise with both pumps and turbines. The lab is equipped with various pumps that come across in our day to day life such as centrifugal pump, reciprocating pump, gear pump and so on… The lab is also equipped with commonly used turbines in power generation like Pelton Wheel, Kaplan and Francis Turbines. In short, Hydraulic Machines Lab helps the students to understand the working of pumps and turbines in detail.

The student community of AISAT, with an ardent commitment towards the society collected fund among the students as an initiative to support the poor and destitute. The student community was able to collect a sum of approx. Rs 20,000, which is a proud achievement.

This inspiring initiative was formally inaugurated by Fr. Alex Kurishuparambil on 21st July 2015 after Onam celebration near the college canteen premise. Mr. Majo Davis, Asst. Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department volunteered as the staff coordinator. Joshua M Joy, student’s community Chairman also presided over the function. Varun K Mohan, the student community member requires special mention for his unconditional support in making this initiative a huge success.

Organizing this event was no easy task, the student’s committee members visited each and every classes and briefly elucidated about the circumstances in which our fellow beings are living in. With this massive awareness created, every student heartily contributed to this fund to support the poor. The success of this initiative also shows the depth of sympathy and benevolence of our student community possesses.

About 400 kg of rice was distributed to the qualifying beneficiaries near the localities of NAD, Kalamassery, CUSAT, Edapally & Vazhakkala.

The student committee members visited some families at FACT, Eloor and consoled the victims paralyzed after unfortunate accidents and provided them with grocery supplies for a month.

The next destination was a Yatheem Ghana, located at Kalamassery. The committee members gave them 100 kg of rice. The committee members had still to accomplish. Despite several technical barricades they went ahead and visited restoration center for blind and sponsored food for one week.

All these gestures of leniency, shows that the student community of AISAT can do a lot more in the future. These initiatives are a matter of joy and will definitely make our institution stand apart from the rest.

Overall, this was a teamwork and this would not have happened if it wasn’t for the co-operation of student community of AISAT. Every student of our institution deserves a piece of honor of this initiative.

Department of Electrical and Electronics had organised a visit for the faculty to the newly installed Solar Power Plant Site of Cochin International Airport Ltd on November 18, 2015. Cochin International airport, the country’s first greenfield airport built under public private partnership is a trendsetter and a path- breaker in aviation infrastructure development. It is the first airport in the world that completely operates on solar power.

The total plant capacity is 12 MWp, comprising of 46,150 solar panels laid across 45 acres of land. The power plant  is producing approximately 60,000 units of electricity per day to be consumed for all its operational functions, which  technically makes the airport ‘ absolutely power neutral’. The project components include PV modules of 265Wp capacity manufactured by Renesola, and Inverters of 1MW capacity manufactured by ABB India. This is a grid connected system without battery storage. Here CIAL gives as much power it produces in day time to KSEB and buy back the power from during night.

cial2

The DC output produced by the plant is fed in to an inverter which converts DC to AC. There are 10 inverters of 1MW capacity. The outputs of these inverters are connected to transformer where the voltage is stepped up and is fed to 110/11kV substation. From the substation power is distributed to the required areas of the airport.

The Department of Civil Engineering in association  with InterCAD Sytems Pvt. Ltd.,organized a 5-day intensive training program on Autodesk Revit Architecture from 11th to 15th January, 2016. Autodesk Revit is a building information modeling software for architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, designers and contractors. It allows users to design a building and structure and its components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and access building information from the building model’s database. Revit is 4D BIM capable with tools to plan and track various stages in the building’s lifecycle, from concept to construction and later demolition.

RevitTrainingProgram

Final year students of AISAT strenuously participated in this program and were given the authorised certification from Autodesk. It helped the students to visualize the conceptual model in parametric three dimensions. Finally, the students were able to prepare the Building Information Modelling workflows. It aids the real construction in developing more accurate designs.
